INTRODUCTION

Microsoft has re-released the Office XP Alternative User Input Update: KB832668. The Office XP Alternative User Input Update: KB832668 updates the framework that is used to support advanced text services in Microsoft Office XP. You will have to restart your computer to install this update.

The Office XP Alternative User Input Update: KB832668 version 2.0 (November 9, 2004) addresses an issue where customers who install the Office XP Alternative User Input Update: KB832668 version 1.0 (March 9, 2004) on a Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system cannot set the default Input Method Editor (IME) in Microsoft Windows to an Office XP IME. How to download and install the update

This update does not apply to a Microsoft Windows XP-based or a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer. If you try to download the update from the Microsoft Download Center, you will receive the following error message:

This update cannot be applied to this Operating System.

The issues that are fixed in this update have been fixed in the following Microsoft Windows operating systems, and they do not require this update:

  • Microsoft Windows Server 2003.
  • Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) or a later version.

Note Before you install this update, make sure that the following requirements have been met:

  • Installation of Microsoft Windows Installer 2.0


Before you install this update, you must install Windows Installer 2.0 or a later version. For additional information about this requirement, see the "Windows Installer Update requirements" section.

Client update

If you installed Office XP from a CD-ROM, you have the following two options:

  • Use the Microsoft Office Update Web site to automatically install all the latest updates that include all available service packs and public updates.
  • Install only the Microsoft Office XP Alternative User Input Update: KB832668 by following the steps that are described later in this article.

Note We recommend that you install the client update by using the Office Update Web site. The Office Update Web site detects your particular installation of Microsoft Office, and you are prompted to install exactly what you have to have to make sure that your Office installation is completely up-to-date.

To have the Office Update Web site detect the required updates that you must install on your computer, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

After detection is complete, you receive a list of recommended updates for your approval. Click Start Installation to complete the process.

Install only the client version of the Office XP Alternative User Input Update: KB832668



To download and install the client version, follow these steps:

  1. Download the update from the following Microsoft Web site:


  2. If you are prompted to install the update, click Yes.
  3. Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
  4. If you are prompted to do this, insert your Office XP CD-ROM, and then click OK.
  5. When you receive a message that indicates the installation was successful, click OK.
  6. Restart your computer.

Note After you install the update, you cannot remove it.

Administrative update

If you installed your Office XP product from a server location, the server administrator must update the server location with the administrative update and deploy that update to your computer.

If you are the server administrator, follow these steps to download the administrative update.

Note This update will requires that you restart your computer after you install the update.

  1. Visit the following Microsoft Web site:
  2. Select your download language.
  3. Click Save to save the update installation file to the selected folder.
  4. In Microsoft Windows Explorer, double-click the installation file (for example, to start installing the update, double-click the officexp-kb832668-v2-fullfile-enu.exe file).
  5. If you are prompted to install the update, click Yes.
  6. Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
  7. In the Type the location where you want to put the extracted files box, type c:\kb832668, and then click OK.
  8. When you are prompted to create the folder, click Yes.
  9. If you are familiar with the procedure for updating your administrative installation, click Start, and then click Run. Type the following command in the Open box

    msiexec /a AdminPath\MSI File /p C:\kb832668\Msctf.msp SHORTFILENAMES=TRUE

    where Admin Path is the path of your administrative installation point for Office XP (for example, C:\OfficeXP), and MSI File is the .msi database package for the Office XP product (for example, Proplus.msi).

    Note You can append /qb+ to the command line so that the Office XP Administrative Installation dialog box and the End User License Agreement dialog box do not appear.
  10. To deploy the update to the client workstations, click Start, and then click Run. Type the following command in the Open box

    msiexec /i AdminPath\MSI FileREINSTALL=Feature List REINSTALLMODE=vomu

    where Admin Path is the path of your administrative installation point for Office XP (for example, C:\OfficeXP),MSI File is the MSI database package for the Office XP product (for example, Proplus.msi), and FeatureList is the list of feature names (case sensitive) that have to be reinstalled for the update. To install all features, you can use REINSTALL=ALL, or you can install the following features:

Windows Installer Update requirements

To install the update that is described in this article, you have to run Windows Installer 2.0 or a later version. Both Windows XP and the Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 3 (SP3) include the Windows Installer 2.0 or a later version.

The Input Method Editor is not available in Microsoft FrontPage for Web Part Properties

When you try to type Korean double-byte character set (DBCS) characters in a Web Part Property on a Web page in Microsoft FrontPage, the Input Method Editor (IME) button is not available.


You cannot change the default IME to a different version of IME 6.5

When you set a new 6.5 version Input Method Editor (IME) as the default IME (for example, from the New Phonetic IME 6.5 to the New ChangJie IME 6.5), the new default IME is not retained when you restart the IME.


You receive an error message in the Msctf.dll file when you click Help on the Language toolbar

When you click Help on the Language toolbar, you may receive an error message in the Msctf.dll. file.


You receive an error message in the Ctfmon.exe file when you start Microsoft Publisher

When you start Publisher, you may receive an error message in the Ctfmon.exe file.


Office XP IME starts setting third-party IME as the default IME

If you install a third-party Input Method Editor (IME) and set it as the default IME, the Office XP IME may continue to start when you start the IME.
