Creating rules and guidelines

Hi all, I think it's time we introduce some clear rules and guidelines for the wiki, preferably supported by consensus. Please comment on the proposals below. If you think there is another topic to be raised, feel free to add it. X010 (talk) 17:52, 26 March 2019 (GMT)

Build naming system

Currently there is no clear policy on the build naming system. I've seen a few possible options from discussions on Discord and elsewhere:

Personally,

  • that will lead to fragmentation as there is no clear 'collection' of the builds and one will simply have too many pages with the same 'depth'
  • my preference. MediaWiki recognises that it's a subpage and makes some optimisations for that; see mediawikiwiki:Subpages for details.
  • that is confusing as not only does it look cluttered, it looks like a namespace, which it isn't.
  • that would lead to fragmentation and the main pages will simply be too large

Please comment on what you think on them. If you think another option is better, please feel free to add them. X010 (talk) 17:52, 26 March 2019 (GMT)

Comments

WILSON2bGg That's pretty much the same as my first option, as the parent OS and the build will still be in the same depth. I've edited the options to make that more clear, and hence removed your option. Please let me know if it's still not correct. X010 (talk) 21:53, 26 March 2019 (GMT)

X010 I made the 1st option a little more like my proposal. WILSON2bGg (talk) 22:01, 26 March 2019 (GMT)

Result

Thanks to all for the discussion. Based on Discord conversations, there is a 2:2 deadlock on options 1 and 2. We've decided to implement option 2 in the end. X010 (talk) 22:47, 31 March 2019 (BST)

Uploading images

For some reason, I can't upload images, it gives a 503 error.--MCpillager - remember, a build list is just a lot of numbers. 17:06, 26 April 2019 (BST)

@MCpillager How are you uploading them - through a URL or through a file source? X010 (talk) 17:11, 26 April 2019 (BST)
@X010 Through a file source. It was tested on Firefox 66.0.2 on Android 6.0.1 and Netscape 9.0.0.6 on Windows 98.--MCpillager - remember, a build list is just a lot of numbers. 17:15, 26 April 2019 (BST)
@MCpillager Strange, I can upload just fine. Could you try to upload again? If the error still occurs, can you share a screenshot of the problem? Thanks in advance. X010 (talk) 17:17, 26 April 2019 (BST)
@X010 Might be because my connection is slow, but I have no problems using the BA Image uploader.--MCpillager - remember, a build list is just a lot of numbers. 17:21, 26 April 2019 (BST)
@MCpillager Currently, cross-linking of images between the BA image uploader and the wiki is not available (which is something we are working upon). For the time being then, you can link the image to the BA image uploader from the wiki using an external link (which will not display the image itself however). X010 (talk) 17:24, 26 April 2019 (BST)
@X010 Here is the picture.--MCpillager - remember, a build list is just a lot of numbers. 17:28, 26 April 2019 (BST)
@MCpillager "The requested topic does not exist." X010 (talk) 22:15, 26 April 2019 (BST)
@X010 i fixd the link.--MCpillager - remember, a build list is just a lot of numbers.

Idea

I got a idea to improve your wiki why not make a userbox so like for example this user is a pro at computers or something Wwepro126 (talk) 19:00, 29 April 2019 (BST)

@Wwepro126 Thanks for your suggestion. I've moved it to the correct place. However, at this time I'm not sure whether we need one as a small wiki; if you desire a certain one you can always request its importation. X010 (talk) 20:11, 29 April 2019 (BST)

Umm

This is crossing the line from just linking your accounts on userpages. https://betawiki.net/wiki/User_talk:Bubbles LilShootDawg (talk) 05:46, 5 May 2019 (BST)

@LilShootDawg Whoever did it, it was not me. We don't have any 'invites' - anyone is free to register to the wiki. It was an IP user after all, so not sure who did it. X010 (talk) 09:47, 5 May 2019 (BST)
It was MCpillager. IP and useragent matches. DeFacto (talk) 10:01, 5 May 2019 (BST)

Moving

Should we move the Windows page to Microsoft Windows? I will leave a poll below.--MCpillager - 2147483648 bytéß øf dãtâ 12:09, 13 May 2019 (BST)

Abuse filter

We can add an abuse filter which permabans any users which try to replace Windows 2000 Server with Windows Server 2000 and Microsoft Cairo with Windows Cairo. That way, we can prevent that Windows Whistler person from attacking us.--MCpillager - Vandalism Police (talk) 13:33, 30 June 2019 (BST)

@MCpillager I don't think such drastic actions are needed to begin with, and abuse filters can generate false positives which makes automated banning not something that I would usually consider. X010 (talk) 13:48, 30 June 2019 (BST)
@x010 you can add an exception to the rule so that autoconfirmed are not affected by it.MCpillager - Vandalism Police (talk) 13:35, 1 July 2019 (BST)Links for relevant external content

Adding TCB links

I found that the page Windows_Vista/5.2.3790.1232.winmain.040819-1629 has the word "tcb_link" misspelled (mcb_link). When I edited "mcb" to "tcb" it shows that the edit is blocked because of "link spamming". Somerandompep (talk) 15:54, 4 May 2020 (BST)

@Somerandompep Can you try again? X010 (talk) 08:42, 10 May 2020 (BST)

Dates

Actually we don't have a common date format for the wiki. I suggest we make that DD/MM/YYYY (so 4/6/2020). What do you think? Feel free to share any alternatives. X010 (talk) 12:05, 4 June 2020 (BST)

I am personally for the ISO8601 date format, that being YYYY-MM-DD (2020-06-04). All the directories on the FTP follow this standard too. Edness (talk) 12:27, 4 June 2020 (BST)
Yeah. ToMi (talk | contribs) 12:28, 4 June 2020 (BST)
I did not realise that the FTP uses that format, and hence would not mind adopting Edness' idea for that reason. X010 (talk) 13:18, 4 June 2020 (BST)
Well, it uses the YYYY/MM/DD format which can be acceptable, but I still prefer DD/MM/YYYY. ToMi (talk | contribs) 13:29, 4 June 2020 (BST)

is their any way to edit the home page, I wanna add some stuff

yea, can I add stuff to the main page, or at least get Admin or Moderator privileges The Beta Editor (talk) 22:16, 4 July 2020 (BST)

Sock account, blocked. To answer the question, only autoconfirmed users can do this. X010 (talk) 00:36, 5 July 2020 (BST)

Automatic filtering of links

I've been trying to add some links to the PC-DOS 7.0 section of the IBM PC-DOS page that were rejected by the abuse filter. The content that I was trying to add is basically:

"Vernon Brooks, lead of the PC-DOS 7.0 development, made a list (sites.goo.../site/pcdosretro/dosmods) of the changes made to PC-DOS 7 while he was managing it. There are also a few more resources on his page (sites.goo..../site/pcdosretro/), both technically and historically relevant."

Can anyone help a brother out? It took me 1 hour to find the link after I lost it, and that was after knowing exactly what to search for. Even here, I've had to reformat the linksD3vi1 (talk) 09:16, 24 July 2020 (BST)

@D3vi1 I've added your edit to the page. You should also be able to add any links without being hit with the abuse filter again. X010 (talk) 12:56, 24 July 2020 (BST)

About ‘creating blanked page’ abuse filter

Hi, can one of the admins change the abuse filter ‘creating blanked page’ doesn’t apply the User and its talk namespace? Blanked user or user talk page because it isn’t a page without substance. —songnaixue(talk) 11:43, 2 January 2022 (CST)

@Songnaixue Done. X010 (talk) 17:36, 6 January 2022 (GMT)
@X010 Creating blanked user (talk) page I had tried and it’s also disallowed. Please change ‘prevent creating blank page’ abuse filter. Not ‘blanked page’ abuse filter but kept changes. —songnaixue(talk) 13:02, 8 January 2022 (CST)
