Install the Public Administrative Update

To install the administrative update, follow these steps.

Note You must run this command from a computer that already has the Windows Installer installed.

  1. Click Start, and then click Run. Type the following command in the Open box, and then click OK

    msiexec /a admin path\MSI File /p C:\adminUpdate\MSP File SHORTFILENAMES=1

where admin path is the path to your administrative installation point for Office XP (for example, C:\OfficeXP), and where MSI File is the MSI database package for the Office XP product (for example, ProPlus.msi), and

where MSP File is the name of the public administrative installation update.

Note If admin path or the path to the MSP file contains a space character, the path must be surrounded by quotation marks (for example, "C:\OfficeXP Admin").

Note You can add /qb+ to the preceding command line to avoid receiving the Office XP Administrative Installation dialog box and the End User License Agreement dialog box.

  2. Click Next in the Microsoft Office XP Administrative Installation dialog box.

Note Do not change your CD Key, installation location, or company name in the Microsoft Office XP Administrative Installation dialog box.
  3. Click I accept the terms in the License Agreement, and then click Install.
  4. If the update contains multiple MSP files, or if you want to apply multiple updates to your network administrative installation, repeat steps 1 through 3 for the remaining MSP files.

At this point, your administrative installation point is updated. Next, you must update the workstations that were originally installed from this administrative installation. To do this, see the Update Your Workstations section later in this article. Any new installations that you run from this administrative installation point will include the update.

Warning Any workstation that was originally installed from this administrative installation before you installed the update cannot use this administrative installation for actions like repairing Office or adding new features until you complete the steps in the Update Your Workstations section for this workstation.

Update Your Workstations

To update workstations, do one of the following:

  • Run Setup.exe from the updated administrative installation of Office to interactively update a workstation.
  • Use the following method to update workstations on which Office XP was already installed from your administrative installation point. These steps must be performed for each workstation.
    1. Click Start, and then click Run. Type the following command in the Open box, and then click OK:

      msiexec /i Admin Path\MSI File REINSTALL=Feature List REINSTALLMODE=vomus

where Admin Path is the path to your administrative installation point for Office XP (for example, C:\OfficeXP),

where MSI File is the MSI database package for the Office XP product (for example, ProPlus.msi), and

where Feature List is the list of feature names (case sensitive) that need to be reinstalled for the update.

Note For more information about feature names, see the REFERENCES section later in this article.

To install all features, you can use REINSTALL=ALL.
    2. Click OK to the message that Setup completed successfully.
    3. Click Yes if you are prompted to restart the computer.

How to Apply Multiple Updates to Workstations

As stated earlier, you can apply multiple updates to the administrative installation at one time and then update the workstations once for all these updates. You can follow the same steps in the Update Your Workstations section. You can combine all the feature names for the REINSTALL property, or just include all the features by using the following command line

msiexec /i Admin Path\MSI File REINSTALL=ALL REINSTALLMODE=vomus

where Admin Path is the path to your administrative installation point for Office XP (for example, C:\OfficeXP), and

where MSI File is the MSI database package for the Office XP product (for example, ProPlus.msi).
