SUMMARY

Microsoft has released an update to Microsoft Office XP. The Office XP Alternative User Input Update: January 24, 2002 updates the framework that is used to support advanced text services in Office XP. Examples of advanced text services include speech recognition, handwriting recognition, and East Asian keyboard input services.

How to download and install the update

Note For Office XP to function correctly, you must restart your computer after you install this Update.

Client Update

If you installed Office XP from a CD-ROM, you have the following two options:

  • Use the Office Product Updates Web site to automatically install all of the latest updates that includes all available Service Packs and Public Updates.
  • Install only the Public Update by using the steps that are described later.

Both options require that you have your Office XP CD-ROM available throughout the installation process.

Office product updates

To have the Office Product Updates Web site detect the required updates that you must install on your computer, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

After detection is complete, you receive a list of recommended updates for your approval. Click Start Installation to complete the process.

Install only the Office XP Alternate User Input Update

Follow these steps to download and install the client update:

  1. Open your Web browser and visit the following Microsoft Web site:
  2. Click Download Now.
  3. Click Save to save the Oxpauiu.exe file to the selected folder.
  4. In Microsoft Windows Explorer, double-click Oxpauiu.exe.
  5. If you are prompted to install the update, click Yes.
  6. Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
  7. If you are prompted to insert your Office XP CD, insert it and then click OK.
  8. When you receive a message that indicates the installation is successful, click OK.
  9. Restart the computer.

Note After you install the update, you cannot remove it.

Administrative update

If you installed Office XP from a server location, the server administrator must update the server location with the administrative update and deploy that update to your computer.

If you are the server administrator, follow these steps to download the update.

Note There is only one update file for both users and administrators.

  1. Click the following link:
  2. Click Save and select a location to save the file on your computer's hard disk.
  3. Click Start and then click Run.
  4. In the Open box, type the following command

    download path\MSI file\Oxpauiu.exe /t:c:\Oxpauiu /c

    where download path is the path to your desktop and MSI file is is the MSI database package for the Office XP product (for example, ProPlus.msi).
  5. Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
  6. After the file is extracted, click Start and then click Run.
  7. In the Open box, type the following command

    msiexec /a admin path\MSI file /p C:\oxpauiu\msctf.msp SHORTFILENAMES=1 /qb

    where admin path is the path to your administrative installation point for Office XP (for example, C:\OfficeXP), and MSI file is the MSI database package for the Office XP product (for example, ProPlus.msi).
  8. To deploy the update to the client workstations, click Start and then click Run.
  9. In the Open box, type the following command:

    msiexec /i admin path\MSI file REINSTALL=ALL REINSTALLMODE=vomus /qb

    where admin path is the path to your administrative installation point for Office XP (for example, C:\OfficeXP), and MSI file is the MSI database package for the Office XP product (for example, ProPlus.msi).Note After installation is completed, restart the client computer.

How to determine whether the update is installed

The updated files are:

  • SPTIP.dll updated to version 5.1.2409.24.
  • MSCTF.dll updated to version 5.1.2409.22.
  • MSIMTF.dll updated to version 5.1.2409.22.

Issues that are fixed by the update

The update fixes the following issues:

  • Office XP Input Method Editor stops working for East Asian languages, and you can type in English only.
  • When you open an attachment that is sent in an e-mail message, Microsoft Outlook 2002 appears to stop responding (hang) and then finally opens the attachment.
