General Troubleshooting
If you are having trouble starting PowerPoint, viewing the presentation, or starting the online broadcast, follow these steps:
- If PowerPoint will not open on the presenter computer (the computer that is broadcasting the presentation to an audience or NetShow Server), or your presentation will not open within PowerPoint on the presenter computer, the issue is not associated with online broadcasting. Please search the Microsoft Knowledge Base with the exact error that you are receiving.
- First make sure that the presenter computer is functioning correctly and the operating environment is clean and stable:
- Make sure that your connection to the Internet or intranet is secure. Test to make sure that you can access resources on your network, such as a remote network share.
- Make sure that there are adequate disk space and system resources on your computer. As a general rule, you should have at least twice as much free disk space for your virtual memory page file as you have physical RAM.
- Close all other programs, especially audio or visual programs, and try starting the online broadcast again.
- If your are using a NetShow server, follow these steps:
- Make sure that you are a member of the NetShow Administrator group on the NetShow server computer.
- Make sure that the On-Line Presentation Broadcast Service is installed and started on the NetShow server.
- When you specify the NetShow server's name in the Server Options window on the presenter computer, type only the server name. Do not use two backslashes before the name. Use
Servernameinstead of \\Servername. - Make sure that the presenter computer can access the services of the NetShow server:
- On the NetShow server, make sure that the file Sample.asf that was installed with NetShow is in the
ASFROOTdirectory. - On the presenter computer, click Start, then click Run.
- In the Open box, type mms://
NetShowServer/sample.asf, then click OK. - Make sure that NetShow starts, and the Sample.asf file plays normally on the presenter computer. If it does not, then NetShow is not configured correctly on the server, or there are other network problems preventing connectivity. Consult your NetShow documentation in this case.
- If some members of the audience cannot view your online broadcast, follow these steps:
- Make sure that the audience computers have access to the public share that you have specified for the online broadcast. This share is specified in Step 1:(required) of the Server Options on your presenter computer. On an Audience machine, browse to the public share using Windows Explorer.
- Make sure that you are not exceeding the maximum number of audience members. Without a NetShow server, you will be limited to fifteen audience members. (Without a NetShow server, you will be limited to ten audience members if you are broadcasting from an NT Workstation.) - Make sure that the audience computer is using an Internet browser that is compatible with online broadcasting. Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 and 5.0 have been tested and verified as compatible.
- If the online broadcast is still not functioning correctly, try a new online broadcast using only the presenter computer and one audience computer. Do not use a NetShow server. If the new online broadcast functions correctly where the old online broadcast failed, follow these steps:
- Quit PowerPoint and all other applications.
- Delete the Broadcast folder on the public share, and all subfolders. The Broadcast folder will be a subfolder of the presenter's user name. These folders are created during the online broadcast, and will be recreated if they are deleted.
- Open the online broadcast that is not working, and delete all of the existing scheduled broadcasts. Point to Online Broadcast and click Set up and Schedule on the Slideshow menu. Select each scheduled broadcast, and click Delete.
- Schedule a new broadcast using only the presenter computer and one audience computer. Do not use a NetShow server. If this step works, reschedule your broadcast to include your entire audience, up to fifteen members. If this step works, the problem was caused by either the NetShow server, or altered or corrupt files in your broadcast folder.
- If the online broadcast is still not functioning, start PowerPoint, click Help, then click Detect and Repair.
