Windows 1.0 is the first version of Microsoft Windows that was released to the public.
Windows 1.0 is the first version of Microsoft Windows that was released on November 20, 1985, and was made available for users of IBM and COMPAQ personal computers running MS-DOS and IBM PC-DOS.

It was in development since at least 1983 and was originally named "Interface Manager". The name was later changed to "Windows" for marketing purposes. Several pre-release versions were released (some of which also leaked later), such as Development Releases 1-5, Alpha, and Beta.
Originally, Microsoft started work on a new graphical environment for MS-DOS-based personal computers, known as "Interface Manager". This environment would include support for existing MS-DOS-based applications, as well as GUI applications that were specifically designed for the new environment.

A final preliminary release, Premiere Edition (1.00), was compiled on 17th August 1985, and subsequently released to a limited number of people (along with a later compile from August 20th that year, with some slight updates), and 1.01, released on November 20th, 1985, was the first version of Windows to be released to general availability (it was called Windows 1.01 to differentiate it from Windows Premiere Edition), whereas several more versions, Windows 1.02 and Windows 1.03, were released, as per smaller updates made to the code, with the latest version, 1.04, being released in April 1987.
Later, at COMDEX 1983 in November, Microsoft demonstrated a new upcoming product, "Microsoft Windows", running on a personal computer with monochrome graphics, and with various applications running alongside each other in "windows".

Windows 1.0 was not widely successful, and was quite understandably pronounced as a "flop" by some people, though it was the start of Microsoft's entrance into the then growing graphical user interface-based operating system market.
During the course of its development, several pre-release versions of Windows were also made available to testers and developers, including a "Development Release #5" from around November 1984, as well as later pre-release versions such as those from January 1985 (Release/) and May 1985 (Release/).

Several copies in other languages, such as Windows 1.03 in German and French (and a hard drive image of Windows 1.03 Japanese for the PC-98), as well as certain OEM releases, such as a Zenith OEM release of Windows 1.01, and Olivetti and Siemens OEM releases of Windows 1.03, are known to exist.
A final preliminary release, Edition/, was released to a group of users for testing Windows prior to its release. Windows 1.01, released on November 20, 1985, was the first version of Windows to be released to general availability, whereas several more versions, /1.02/ and /1.03/, were released as more changes were made to Windows, up to, /1.04/, which was released in April 1987, the latter of which also added support for the newly introduced IBM PS/2 series of personal computers which was released at that same time.

Several versions in other languages were also released, as well as OEM versions for both PC and non-PC compatible models (such as the Zenith Z-100).

Windows 1.0 is the first version of Microsoft Windows that was released on November 20, 1985, and was made available for users of IBM and COMPAQ personal computers running MS-DOS and IBM PC-DOS.

Originally, Microsoft started work on a new graphical environment for MS-DOS-based personal computers, known as "Interface Manager". This environment would include support for existing MS-DOS-based applications, as well as GUI applications that were specifically designed for the new environment.

Later, at COMDEX 1983 in November, Microsoft demonstrated a new upcoming product, "Microsoft Windows", running on a personal computer with monochrome graphics, and with various applications running alongside each other in "windows".

During the course of its development, several pre-release versions of Windows were also made available to testers and developers, including a "Development Release #5" from around November 1984, as well as later pre-release versions such as those from January 1985 (Alpha Release) and May 1985 (Beta Release).

A final preliminary release, Premiere Edition, was released to a group of users for testing Windows prior to its release. Windows 1.01, released on November 20, 1985, was the first version of Windows to be released to general availability, whereas several more versions, 1.02 and 1.03, were released as more changes were made to Windows, up to, 1.04, which was released in April 1987, the latter of which also added support for the newly introduced IBM PS/2 series of personal computers which was released at that same time.

Several versions in other languages were also released, as well as OEM versions for both PC and non-PC compatible models (such as the Zenith Z-100).

Press kit

In late 1983 (over two years before Windows 1.0 was actually released), Microsoft sent out press kits which contained a squeegee (window washer) and a washcloth. It also contained an invitation to attend a press conference in New York on November 10, 1983, where the official name of Windows was revealed.[1]
