Microsoft has released the Word 2002 post-Service Pack 3 hotfix package for Microsoft Word 2002. This article describes the following items about the update:

INTRODUCTION

This article describes the Microsoft Word 2002 issues that are fixed in the Word 2002 post-Service Pack 3 hotfix package that is dated May 5, 2004.

Issues that are fixed by the hotfix package

The following issues are fixed in this hotfix package.

  • 831136 You cannot print color AutoShape objects as grayscale in Word 2002


  • 832874 "Word cannot save this file" error message when you try to save your changes in a Word 2002 document to DocsOpen


  • 833034 A hyperlink that is in a received e-mail message may not be valid if it is opened by a user who does not use Word 2002 as their e-mail editor


  • 832343 You receive the "Word did not save the document" message when you save a Word 2002 document in DocsOpen


  • 833312 The indent and the tab settings change when you copy a numbered or a bulleted style by using the Organizer in Word 2002


  • 833307 Word 2002 quits unexpectedly with an access violation when you switch to an open document in Word 2002


  • 832580 Word 2002 stops responding and you receive an error message when you run a VBA macro that uses the .ReplaceAll property


  • 834011 Mail Merge data source opens or closes in Word 2002 each time that you click or press a key


  • 832859 The title bar of your Word document may flash or Word may stop responding when you scroll in a Word 2002 document that contains tables

  • 835226 Only the first occurrence of the NUMPAGES field is updated when you try to update the fields in the body of your Word 2002 document


  • 838012 Black bars appear in a Word 2002 document when a screen reader is active

  • 840662 You receive a security warning message when you open or when you save a document in Word 2002


The following issues are also fixed in this hotfix package.

  • When you open a Word 2002 document in Word 2000, the left side of the Status bar is blank, and you cannot tell which page of the document is open. This problem occurs after you install the hotfix that is described in the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  • When you run a Visual Basic macro that tries to read the IconLabel property of a document that has been embedded as an icon in a Word document, you receive the following error message:

    Run-time error '16389': Internal error.


  • When you use a custom style in a Word document with the Track Changes feature turned on, the style for the next paragraph is not applied.
  • When you change the color quality of your display settings from Medium (16 bit) to Highest (32 bit) while Word is running, the Graphical Device Interface (GDI) of Microsoft Windows may leak memory. This problem may occur when you change the color quality setting in Windows. (To do this, right-click the Windows desktop, click Properties, and then click the Settings tab.).
  • You send a Word document to an e-mail recipient, and the Word document contains tracked changes. You do not receive a warning message that the document contains changes when you click Mail Recipient (for Review) or Mail Recipient (as Attachment) on the Send to shortcut menu.
  • When you work with a Word document that is opened in Hummingbird DM 5.1, Word may quit unexpectedly. (Hummingbird is (a document management program.) You receive the following error message:

    Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

    If you view the details of the error message, you receive an error signature that is similar to one of the following:

  • When you perform a mail merge in Microsoft Word 2002 with an Excel file that is attached to your mail merge main document by using a OLE DB provider, your mail merge takes a longer than expected to complete.
  • When you update the fields in your Word 2002 document that contain the LISTNUM field, the LISTNUM field is not updated correctly.
  • When you use the Edit File tool to open an Office document, the document is opened as read-only if the Office program is already running.

  • When you do not use the Reviewing Pane in Word 2002 to accept insertions by another user, deletions may also be accepted.

    To use the Reviewing Pane, click Show on the Reviewing toolbar. If the Reviewing toolbar is not displayed, point to Toolbars on the View menu, and then click Reviewing.
  • When you print an Organization Chart in Word 2002 that contains an elbow connector or a curved connector that connects two nodes, the lines for the connectors may no t be printed connecting the two nodes. Instead, the connector lines may run to the top of the page from one node, re-emerge from the bottom of the page or from top of the page, and then the connector line may continue to the other node.
  • You select a paragraph in a Word document in Word 2002, and then use the Style box on the Formatting toolbar to change the style of the selected paragraph. When you select a different paragraph and then press F4 to repeat the style format, the style is not applied.
  • When you print a Word 2002 document that contains AutoShape lines to a PostScript printer, the lines may not be printed when the print scale is set to print larger than 100 percent.
  • in Word 2002, you type in a Word document from an earlier version of Word. The document contains horizontally merged table cells. The document may become damaged or corrupted, and Word may stop responding (hang).
  • When you type an opening quotation mark after a soft line break (press SHIFT+ENTER), the opening quotation mark is typed as a closing quotation mark. This issue occurs when the "Straight quotes" with "Smart quotes" option on the AutoFormat as you type tab is turned on in Word 2002.
  • When you try to follow a hyperlink in a HTML Web page that was created in Word 2002, the hyperlink may not function. This issue may occur when the hyperlink contains a bookmark name that contains trailing spaces.

  • The full-file version of this hotfix is also the administrative version of this hotfix. You can install this version of the hotfix with Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 2 (SP2). However, Microsoft has not tested this fix on Office XP SP2 to the same extent as on Office XP Service Pack 3. If you install this hotfix on a computer with Office XP SP2 installed, some file conflicts might occur. Microsoft supports this configuration, but we do not recommend this configuration.
