To update all the NUMPAGES fields that are contained in the body of your document, you must repeatedly press F9 as many times as there are NUMPAGES fields in the body of your document.

To update the fields in the body of your document, press CTRL+A, and then press F9.

Additional information

After you install and activate this hotfix, you may experience the following symptom:

  • When you print a document that contains the NUMPAGES field, the NUMPAGES field may print incorrectly. For example, this problem may occur with a document that contains page fields that are similar to the following:

    {PAGE} of {NUMPAGES}

When you print, the page fields may appear similar to the following:

    1 of 1

    2 of 2

    3 of 3

Note When you view the document on screen, the page fields (NUMPAGES) appear correctly.

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods before you print your document.

Method 1: Turn off background printing

Note Background printing permits Word 2002 to print your document in the background so that you can continue to work in Word while your document is being printed.

To turn off background printing, follow these steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. On the Print tab, click to clear the Background printing check box.
  3. Click OK.

Method 2: Turn on the Reverse Print Order option

Note The Reverse Print Order option prints pages in reverse order, starting with the last page of the document. Do not use this method if you are printing an envelope.

To turn on the Reverse Print Order option, follow these steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.
  2. On the Print tab, click to select the Reverse print order check box.
  3. Click OK to close the Options dialog box.
