NWRedir Reports Incorrect Free Space If Limited by Admin |
Q160897
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 95
SYMPTOMS
If a NetWare network administrator has limited the amount of disk space available to a user in a particular folder on a NetWare server, the free disk space available reported by the Microsoft Client for NetWare Networks does not reflect this limitation.
The value reported as free disk space is the total amount of space physically available on the server's volume, instead of the amount available to the user.
CAUSE
The Microsoft Client for NetWare Networks makes a single request for directory information with the permanent directory handle that returns the total free disk space.
RESOLUTION
This issue is resolved by the following updated file for Windows 95 and OSR2:
For the Bindery (non-NDS) version of the Microsoft Client for NetWare Networks:
NWREDIR.VXD version 4.00.957 dated 8/19/96 123,987 bytes
For the NDS version of the Microsoft Client for NetWare Networks (Microsoft Service for NetWare Directory Services):
NWREDIR.VXD version 4.00.970 dated 8/19/96 174,618 bytes
NOTE: Later versions of these files do not resolve this issue. For more information, see the Notes in the "More Information" section later in this article.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 95 and OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2). An update to address this problem is now available, but is not fully regression tested and should be applied only to computers experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft does not recommend implementing this update at this time. Contact Microsoft Technical Support for additional information about the availability of this update.
This issue is resolved in Microsoft Windows 98.
MORE INFORMATION
Notes
This update resolves the issue only if the user performs a "MAP ROOT" to the actual subdirectory that is limited in size. In other words, if the user maps to the top-level volume and then changes directories to the limited directory, the new NWRedir will still not report the correct limited directory size. The user must issue a MAP ROOT command in the form of:
MAP ROOT <drive>:=server/volume:directory
- These files potentially break functionality for users who do not have any directory restrictions on very large volumes (over 2 GB in size) and who rely on correct space to be reported. This version of NWRedir reports no more than 2 GB of free space (0xffff * ClusterSize) because the only NCP available to request free space is limited to a 16-bit value for free clusters.
- Because of the limitations listed, these NWRedir changes will not be propagated to future versions of NWRedir. This is a stand-alone version that incorporates all the prior updates, but will not be incorporated into future updates.
