MSNDS Client Does Not Prompt to Log On |
Q158058
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows 95
SYMPTOMS
When you use the Microsoft NetWare Directory Services client (MSNDS) to connect to a Novell NetWare version 3.x or 4.x server, you may not receive a prompt to log on.
CAUSE
MSNDS performs a Get Nearest Server NCP query rather than a Get General Server NCP query. A Get General Server query is issued by a Windows 95 client only if a Get Nearest Server query does not report any NetWare servers. In this case, MSNDS should perform a Get General Server NCP query instead.
RESOLUTION
This issue is resolved by the following updated file for Windows 95 and OSR2, and later versions of this file:
For the NDS version of the Microsoft Client for NetWare Networks (Microsoft Service for NetWare Directory Services) only:
NWREDIR.VXD version 4.00.972 dated 10/21/96 174,618 bytes
This version of the NWREDIR.VXD file is compatible only with the Microsoft NetWare Directory Services client. It does not work with the Microsoft Client for NetWare Networks (without the Microsoft Service for NetWare Directory Services installed).
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Windows 95 and OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2). An update to address this problem is now available, but is not fully regression tested and should be applied only to computers experiencing this specific problem. Unless you are severely impacted by this specific problem, Microsoft does not recommend implementing this update at this time. Contact Microsoft Technical Support for additional information about the availability of this update.
This issue is resolved in Microsoft Windows 98.
