SYMPTOMS
When you open an HTML page that contains images in FrontPage Editor, a broken picture icon appears instead of the image. However, if you open the page in your Web browser, the image is displayed correctly.
NOTE: In FrontPage 98 your image will be visible in FrontPage Editor but it will not appear in a Web browser.
CAUSE
This problem occurs when the following are true:
- You are using a disk-based web.
-and-
- The Web directory is shared over a network.
-and-
- You mapped a drive directly to the shared folder instead of the hard disk.
-and-
- You opened the Web page remotely (over the network) in FrontPage Editor.
-and-
- You are running Microsoft Windows 95 on the computer where you are using FrontPage Editor.
WORKAROUND
Although this problem does not prevent the images from displaying correctly in a web browser, you can use one of the following methods to work around this problem so that the images appear correctly in FrontPage Editor:
Method 1. Use Microsoft Windows NT
Install Microsoft Windows NT on the computer where you are using FrontPage Editor to open the shared Web.
-or-
Install FrontPage on a machine which is running the Microsoft Windows NT operating system.
Method 2. Copy the Web to your local hard disk
- Copy the Web to your local hard disk.
- In FrontPage Explorer, open the Web you copied to your hard disk.
- Make any changes you want in FrontPage Editor.
- Copy the Web back to the remote source.
Method 3. Map to the drive not the directory
If your web is located at E:\MyWeb, map a drive to E:\ not E:\MyWeb. When you open the Web, specify the location as E:\MyWeb and open the <Root Web>.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
MORE INFORMATION
A disk-based web can be used instead of a Web server if a Web server with authoring access is not available. A disk-based web is simply a folder path to store the necessary Web files (for example, C:\MyWeb). If the path does not exist, Microsoft FrontPage will ask you if you want to create the path.
