256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows registry
SYMPTOMS
You try to start an application by using the Microsoft SoftGrid Client. However, the application does not start, and you receive an error message that resembles the following:
The SoftGrid Client log file, Sftlog.txt, contains the following entry:
The SoftGrid client could not connect to a server because it encountered error xxxxxx
06-0000000E trying to set up the data directory for this user.
The client was unable to connect to a SoftGrid server (rc xxxxxx
06-0000000E)
CAUSE
This behavior can occur when the SoftGrid "user data" directory is inaccessible.
RESOLUTION
Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
The SoftGrid "user data" directory stores the user settings, the icons, and the message history. The path of the "user data" directory is defined in the UserDataDirectory registry value. The default value is %APPDATA%.
To resolve this issue, use Registry Editor to verify that the path of the SoftGrid "user data" directory is valid. To do this, follow these steps:
- From the SoftGrid Client, start Registry Editor.
- Locate and then expand the following subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Softricity\SoftGrid Client\CurrentVersion\Configuration
- Right-click UserDataDirectory, and then click Modify.
- Review and, if it is necessary, correct the path that is specified in the Value data box.
- Exit Registry Editor.
If you try to start an application and you do not have access to the path that is specified in the Value data box, the application will not start, and you will receive the errors that are mentioned in the "Symptoms" section.
