SYMPTOMS

When you try to connect a Windows Vista-based computer to a Microsoft Broadband Networking Wireless Base Station MN-700 by using a wireless network connection, you cannot establish the connection successfully. In this scenario, if you enable wireless LAN tracing, the following error information is logged:

Driver disconnected while associating

You may experience this issue if the MN-700 device is configured to use only the 802.11g mode.

Note You may also experience this issue if you try to connect to the MN-700 device from a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer that has certain driver and firmware combinations.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the MN-700 device does not broadcast the correct rates information in the Supported Rates information element when the device is configured to use only the 802.11g mode.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, configure the MN-700 device to use the 802.11b/g mode instead of the 802.11g mode. After you configure the MN-700 device to use 802.11b/g, the MN-700 device broadcasts the correct number of information element rates.

To configure wireless LAN tracing in Windows Vista, follow these steps:

1. Open an elevated Command Prompt window. To do this, click Start, type cmd in the Start Search box, right-click cmd in the Programs list, and then click Run as administrator.
   
   If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type your password or click Continue.
2. At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

   netsh wlan set tra yes

   Note If you want to enable persistent tracing to continue tracing after you restart the computer, type the following command instead:

   netsh wlan set tra persistent

3. To disable wireless LAN tracing, type the following command, and then press ENTER:

   netsh wlan set tra no

After you enable wireless LAN tracing, the tracing log files are stored in the %WINDIR%\tracing\wireless folder.
