This article describes how to manually configure your Microsoft Base Station.

There may be situations when you do not want to use the Setup wizard to configure your Microsoft Base Station. For example, you may want to add a Base Station to a preexisting network. Also, you cannot use the Setup wizard to configure a Windows 2000-based computer.
To manually configure your Base Station, do the following:
Step 1: Gather Configuration Information
Write down the network settings for your Internet connection. Contact your Internet service provider (ISP) to find information about what type of connection you have and what the settings are.
Step 2: Install the Microsoft Broadband Networking Software
- Insert the Setup CD-ROM into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive. If the Setup wizard does not start automatically, double-click My Computer, double-click the CD-ROM icon, and then double-click Setup or Setup.exe.
- When the first part of the Setup wizard completes, you will receive a message that the software has been installed. The second part of the Setup wizard configures your hardware. Close the Setup wizard before the hardware configuration.
Step 3: Connect the Base Station
- Position the Base Station close to your modem and computer, and near the center of your intended network area. If you want to position the base vertically, attach the included stand. For more information about positioning your Base Station, see the user's guide that came with your Base Station.
- Unplug the modem cable from the Ethernet port on your computer. Leave the other end of the cable plugged in to your modem. Plug the cable in to the To Modem port on your Base Station.
- Plug one end of the blue Ethernet cable that came with your Base Station in to port 1 on the back of the Base Station, and plug the other end in to the Ethernet port on your computer.
- Plug one end of the power cord that came with your Base Station in to the Power port on your Base Station, and plug the other end in to an electrical outlet. The power indicator on the front of the Base Station should illuminate.
Step 4: Open the Base Station Management Tool
- Open your Web browser (you must have Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or later or Netscape 4.7 or later), and type the IP address of the Base Station in the address field. By default, this address is http://192.168.2.1. However, this address can be changed in the Base Station Management Tool.
- To log on, type the Base Station password. By default, this password is admin.
Note If this password has been changed from the default and you do not know the new password, you must reset the Base Station to the factory default settings. For information, see the "How to Restore the Base Station to the Factory Default Settings" section of this article.
- On the Management menu, click Change Password, and then create a new Base Station password.
- Click Wide Area Network. On the Wide Area Network page, select the type of Internet connection that you have, and then enter the settings that were provided by your ISP. (If you do not know the type of connection that you have, contact your ISP.)
- If you are configuring a wireless Base Station, on the Security menu, click Wireless Security, and then create the security settings. For more information about wireless security, see your Base Station user guide.
How to Restore the Base Station to the Factory Default Settings
There may be situations when you need to restore the Base Station to the factory default settings. For example, if the password for your Base Station has been changed and you do not know the new password, you must reset the Base Station to connect to it.
To restore the default settings:
- Use a pointed object to press the reset button on the back of the Base Station, while you watch the power indicator light. Hold the button until the light starts to blink green and orange (after about five seconds).
- Release the button, and then wait for the light to turn steady orange, and then green (this takes about 60 seconds).
Important Do not unplug the Base Station when you are restoring the default settings.
