SUMMARY

When switching between two or more different versions of Microsoft Word and printing documents to a PostScript printer, do the following to prevent or resolve any printing problems:

  1. After printing a file on the PostScript printer from an earlier version of Word, turn off the PostScript printer and then turn it back on.

This will clear the PostScript printer’s virtual memory, which contains a dictionary created by the PostScript initialization (.INI) file provided with the earlier version of Word.

  2. Download the PostScript initialization file provided with the latest version of Word that will be used.

MORE INFORMATION

Word’s PostScript initialization files are designed so that they are backwards compatible with the PostScript initialization files provided in earlier versions of Word.

However, if a PostScript initialization file from an earlier version of Word is downloaded to the printer’s virtual memory first, it may create a dictionary in virtual memory that may not correctly support a print file created by a later version of Word.

Network PostScript printer drivers are available from the Supplemental Printer Kit for Word version 5.5b. New or updated Microsoft products can be obtained from Microsoft Sales Information Center at (800) 426-9400. If calling from outside the United States, contact Microsoft International Customer Service at (206) 936-8661.

The updated files are also available online as DWXPS0. It can be found in the Software/Data Library by searching for Q45512 or S12808. DWXPS0 was archived using the PKware file-compression utility.

DWXPS0.EXE is name of the file on the Microsoft Download Service (MSDL).

Word 5.5’s PostScript printer driver (PSNET.PRD) and initialization file (PSNET.INI) for networks does not leave a dictionary in the PostScript printer’s virtual memory. Microsoft recommends using PSNET.PRD and PSNET.INI for this type of printing environment.
