Summary:

When you use the numbering feature in Word for Windows, removing the inserted numbers removes all tabs and spaces that were inserted at the beginning of a paragraph before numbering the paragraph.

More Information:

When a paragraph is numbered in a Word for Windows document using the Utilities Renumber command, a number is inserted at the beginning of the selected paragraphs (either manual or automatic) followed by a tab. Removing numbering from a Word for Windows document should remove the numbers and the associated tabs, but should not remove the tabs that were set before numbering.

Steps to Reproduce the Problem

1. Open up a new document in Word for Windows.

2. Type a few lines of text, inserting one or two tabs at the beginning of each line.

3. From the Utilities menu, choose Renumber and select All and Automatic. Choose OK.

   Word for Windows adds a number to the beginning of each line of the document. Word also adds a tab to any line that did not already have at least one tab at the beginning of the line.

4. From the Utilities menu, choose Renumber and select Remove. Choose OK.

Notice that each line of the document is now flush left because all tabs have been removed. The document has been altered from the state it was in before the numbering.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word for Windows versions 1.0, 1.1, and 1.1a. We are researching this problem and will post new information here as it becomes available.
