SUMMARY

When creating a document dictionary for a file located in a subdirectory with an extension (for example, DIRNAME2.EXT), Microsoft Word versions 5.00 and 5.50 will name the document dictionary with the name of the directory instead of the file.

For example, if the directory structure is of the following form:

d:1.EXT2.EXT....DOC,

The dictionary will be named DIRNAME1.CMP and will reside in the same parent directory as the directory DIRNAME1.EXT. For this example, the full path names of the document and dictionary files would be as follows:

Document file: d:1.EXT2.EXT....DOC Dictionary file: d:1.CMP

Word parses the full pathname of the document file by looking for the first occurrence of a period, then appends CMP as the file’s extension. This results in document dictionaries being saved with an incorrect filename into directories other than where the document resides.

Network users without rights to the parental directories with extensions will not be able to create document dictionaries. A possible workaround is to rename the directories without extensions (for example, rename DIRNAME1.EXT to DIRNAME1).

Document dictionaries are named correctly in Word version 4.00.

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

If a document is in a directory structure of the following form:

d:....DOC,

The dictionary will be named FILENAME.CMP and will reside in the same directory as the document. For this example, the full pathnames of the document and dictionary files would be as follows:

Document file: d:....DOC Dictionary file d:....CMP
