Works: Charts Print Slowly on Dot Matrix Printer

SUMMARY

When printing to a dot matrix printer from Microsoft Works version 2.00, charts tend to print very slowly. Dot matrix printers have very small buffers–only one or two lines when printing charts. After the buffer is full the printer prints, then pauses while it gathers more information to print. Printing charts in a lower resolution may help the printer to print a little faster. To select a lower resolution, do the following:

  1. From the Print menu, choose Printer Setup.
  2. In the Graphics list box, select Graphics.
  3. Select the lowest dot per inch (DPI) resolution.

In some cases, the printer will time out and be unable to complete the print job. This is due to the small buffer in the printer. You can use the DOS Mode command to solve this printing problem by entering the Mode statement at the root directory, or by inserting it below the PATH statement in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. The following command is used when printing to LPT1; if printing to a different port (LPT2, COM1, etc.) insert that port name instead of LPT1.

MODE LPT1:,,P
