The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for Windows version 1.0

Summary:

The following are the supported graphics file formats in Word for Windows 1.0:

(ADI) AutoDesk’s AutoCAD Device-Independent Binary Plotter Format (BMP) Microsoft Windows Paintbrush Bitmap Graphics File Format (CGM) Computer Graphics Metafile (EPS) Encapsulated PostScript (HPGL) Hewlett-Packard Graphics Language (IMA) Zenographics Mirage Graphics File Format (PIC) Lotus PIC Graphics Format (PIC) Micrografx Draw! Graphics Format (PIC) Video Show Graphics Format (TIFF) Tagged Image File Format (Specification 4.0) (WMF) Windows Metafile Format

More Information:

(ADI) AutoDesk’s AutoCAD Device-Independent Binary Plotter Format

The AutoDesk Device Interface (ADI) is a device-independent driver interface built into AutoCAD. The Word for Windows graphics filter ADIMPORT.FLT is designed to read the ADI device driver’s binary output. ADI plotter files are displayed as monochrome images in Word for Windows.

Note: This ADI plotter format is not the same as AutoCAD’s other drawing interchange formats: ASCII or Binary DXF, or DXB. The specifications, and instructions for exporting this format for versions of AutoCAD through AutoCAD 386 Release 10, as well as the format specification, are discussed on pages 89-93 of the AutoCAD “Installation and Performance Guide.”

The graphics filter for the AutoCAD device-independent binary plotter format is ADIMPORT.FLT.

(BMP) Microsoft Windows Paintbrush File Format

Monochrome, 16-, 256-, or 24-bit color RGB bitmap images can be pasted from the Windows Clipboard. All images are converted to monochrome, and only images that were originally monochrome retain their original display size. Bitmap images cannot be inserted as pictures. This support is built into Word for Windows version 1.0.

(CGM) Computer Graphics Metafile

Monochrome and color images with a 16-bit integer coordinate system are supported. 32 or 64-bit fixed or floating-point coordinate systems (normally only supported by mini or mainframe software) are not.

If inserted as a picture, the original image display size is not preserved. CGM can optionally be pasted from the Windows version 3.0 Clipboard. In this scenario, the original image display size is preserved. The graphics filter for CGM graphics is CGMIMP.FLT.

(EPS) Encapsulated PostScript

Word for Windows version 1.0 comes with macros that allow insertion of EPS images into documents using the Insert Picture command.

The InsertPicture and FilePrint macros modify the Insert Picture and File Print commands so that when a picture is inserted with the EPS extension, the macros take over and convert the EPS file into two new files, a TIFF or Windows metafile that is used for display and a PostScript language file that is used for printing on a PostScript device.

(HPGL) Hewlett-Packard Graphics Language

HPGL images should be generated for the Hewlett-Packard (HP) 7475A plotter. The graphics filter for HPGL graphics is HPGLIMP.FLT.

(IMA) Zenographics Mirage Graphics Format

Word for Windows version 1.0 supports the IMA format for versions 4.3, 5.0, 5.1, 5.11, and 5.12 of Zenographics Mirage. In version 5.20, Zenographics changed the IMA format to a form that is not backward compatible with or readable by our converter. However, all versions of Mirage include an alternate CGM export option. Releases 5.20, 5.21, 5.22, 5.22a, and the latest release 5.22b also include an EPS file export option. The graphics filter for IMA graphics is IMAMPORT.FLT

(PIC) Lotus PIC Graphics Format

This format is used primarily for creating simple graphics from spreadsheet data in Lotus products such as Lotus 1-2-3, and Borland’s Quattro Pro. The graphics filter that supports the PIC format is LOTUSPIC.FLT.

(PIC) Micrografx Draw! Graphics Format

The PIC format is an export option of Micrografx Draw!, and is not the same as the program’s internal DRW format. The graphics filter that supports Draw! PIC graphics is DRAW.FLT.

(PIC) General Parametrics Video Show Graphics Format

This is the graphics format of General Parametrics Corporation’s Video Show Film Recorder. This device is designed to create color slides with a resolution of 2000 x 2000. The graphics filter that supports Video Show PIC graphics is VIDMPORT.FLT.

(TIFF) Tagged Image File Format

Word for Windows version 1.0 includes a built-in TIFF 4.0 graphics filter. Monochrome (TIFF B) and gray scale (TIFF G) images are supported; however, color images (TIFF P or R) are not.

(WMF) Windows Metafile Format

Monochrome or color Windows metafiles of up to 400 DPI are supported for import by choosing Picture from the Insert menu, or by pasting from the Windows Clipboard. Windows metafiles that can be imported are limited to 64K in size. The graphics filter WMF files is WMF.FLT.
