Word 4.00: Getting Cursor Linedraw on HP LaserJet Series II

SUMMARY
The Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet Series II has an internal symbol set, IBMUS, that is compatible with the IBM Extended Character Set (ECS). This symbol set has all of the graphics characters and math symbols at the same decimal value as the ECS, meaning that it can be used to get all of the cursor linedraw characters in Word version 4.00; however, the Roman-8 symbol set is the default set for the printer and the one that Word supports. This symbol set does not follow IBM standards and is largely composed of foreign characters and characters containing diacritical marks.
Switching from the Roman-8 set to the IBMUS set is done by modifying the printer driver. In the control code of the printer driver, change “^[(8U” to “^[(10U” at beginmod in the font description table for the desired font, Courier 12 or Lineprinter 8.5 (the only fonts available internally on the Series II). Make sure to set the CTP pointer at the beginning of the font description table to NIL so that no characters in the symbol set get remapped by Word.
These changes have been made to the Word version 4.00a HP LaserJet printer drivers.
These changes have also been made to the HP LaserJet printer drivers included with Word version 5.00.
