Word 5.00: Permanent Font Downloading on HP LaserJet

SUMMARY

Microsoft Word version 5.00’s internal font-downloading program downloads font files as temporary fonts to help prevent “Out of Memory” messages from occurring while printing documents. Temporary fonts are fonts stored in the printer memory that can be overwritten if other information (fonts, document text, etc.) sent to the printer cannot fit into existing available memory.

Permanent fonts remain in the printer’s memory until you turn off the printer or send an escape sequence to the printer that instructs it to clear all memory containing permanent fonts. To change the attribute of a font from temporary to permanent, modify the DAT file that corresponds to the printer driver (PRD) being used.

MORE INFORMATION

For Hewlett-Packard (HP) LaserJet printers, the escape code for downloading a font as a temporary font is ESCc4F, and the escape code for downloading a font as a permanent font is ESCc5F. ESC appears as a left arrow in the escape-code sequence.

In the Word 5.00 DAT file format, each font has a description bytes section that contains download information about the font. The temporary font-download escape sequence is preceded by the font filename and the unique ID number of the font. Therefore, the area of the PRD to change appears as follows:

font filename <Esc>*c#####d4F

To change the font from a temporary downloaded font to a permanent downloaded font, do the following:

  1. Load the DAT file that corresponds to the downloadable printer driver (*.PRD) file into Word as a text file.
  2. Search for the font filename using the Search command.
  3. Change the escape sequence string “d4F” in the line below the font filename to “d5F”.
