MS-DOS

Summary:

Learning DOS will at times not place check marks next to completed lessons. This problem can occur from the following:

  • When you first started Learning DOS, you only entered your first name. The second time you started Learning DOS, you entered both your first and last names. Learning DOS recognizes this as two different names and won’t recognize it. This means that it sees you as a new user, and therefore, completed lessons will have no check marks. To remedy this problem, always enter your name in exactly the same way.
  • Learning DOS is started from directory “a” the first time that it was started. The second time it was started from directory “b” as the current directory. The file that saves the information about the user is saved in the current directory. This means that the first time the information was saved to directory “a” and the second time the program could not find this file in directory “b,” so it assumed that you are a new user, so it doesn’t display check marks.

More Information:

Learning DOS has the ability to keep track of lessons completed by different people using the same set of disks on the same machine, if each person enters his or her own name when first starting Learning DOS. This allows Learning DOS to identify each person for future sessions. Learning DOS stores these names as internal strings to keep track of the lessons completed by each person. If a name is entered when invoking Learning DOS and Learning DOS has stored this name in a file with a CHK extension, any lessons completed by the person with that name are denoted by a check mark just to the left of the corresponding lesson menu item.
