Word 5.50: ALT+SPACEBAR Under Windows 3.00 Enhanced Mode

PSS ID Number: Q70435 Article last modified on 01-24-1995

5.00 5.50

MS-DOS

SUMMARY

When running Microsoft Word version 5.00 or 5.50 under Microsoft Windows version 3.00 enhanced mode, the ALT+SPACEBAR key combination will switch Word into a window and/or pull down the Windows system menu if this key combination is not reserved in the Windows program information file (PIF) for Word.

MORE INFORMATION

There are three possible solutions to this situation:

  1. When running Word 5.00 under Windows 3.00, use the key combination ALT+X+SPACEBAR to remove character formatting. When running Word 5.50 under Windows 3.00, use the CTRL+SPACEBAR combination to remove character formatting.

  2. Use the ALT+Z speed formatting key combination to remove all formats except the font and size formats. Unlike the ALT+SPACEBAR speed key, ALT+Z does not return the font and font size to the normal character format.

  3. Modify the Windows PIF for Word to reserve the ALT+SPACEBAR shortcut key.

    1. Choose the PIF Editor icon from the Accessories of the Windows Program Manager.

    2. Select File Open (ALT, F, O) and select the PIF file for Word (usually in the Word directory) and choose OK.

    3. Choose the Advanced button at the bottom of the PIF Editor window.

    4. In the Other Options box at the bottom of the Advanced Options window, place a check in the box labeled ALT+SPACE.

    5. Choose OK.

    6. From the File menu, choose Save to save the above change.

Note: The WORD.PIF supplied with Word 5.50 has the ALT+SPACEBAR shortcut key reserved. The Word version 5.50 WORD.PIF file is located in the Word program directory.
