SUMMARY

In some cases, while using a NEC LC-890 printer, a slowdown in printing may occur after the first print job has completed. This problem seems to occur in cases where the LC-890 has upgraded ROM version 47, revision 2. With ROM version 47, revision 1, this problem does not occur. The version and revision of the ROM can be found on the start page printed by the printer. This problem also seems to be limited to parallel connections.

If you are using Word stand alone (that is, not on a network), use the interactive mode. The printer reads online processing while in this mode until it times-out (or indefinitely, if the printer is set for infinite retry). This behavior is expected and does not cause problems. While in this mode, the second and successive print jobs do not slow down.

If you are on a network, the workaround described above is not as helpful because the printer is “actively” waiting for more information to be sent. In at least one case, but not all, using a DOS Mode statement (for example, mode lptx:,,p) to configure the parallel port for perpetual retry on parallel printer time-out has corrected this problem.

Microsoft and NEC are researching this problem and will post new information here as it becomes available.

MORE INFORMATION

Changing the download flag from 2 to 6 causes Word to download the INI file only on the first print job of the Word session. This method should help reduce the print time of subsequent print jobs.
