SUMMARY

To allow Microsoft Word to print on legal-sized paper with the NEC LC-890, the appropriate bin must be configured for legal-sized paper from the front panel on the printer. The panel allows hopper 1 (the lower bin) and/or hopper 2 to have legal-sized paper. The switch on hopper 2 (the upper bin) that selects letter or legal size has no effect within Word.

In addition to setting the appropriate paper size from the front panel, you must set the appropriate page dimensions with the Format Division Margins command.

Word version 4.00 supports only the top bin with the original printer drivers, POSTSCRP.PRD and POSTSCRL.PRD, that were shipped with the program. The printer driver for the NEC LC-890 in Word version 5.00 supports both bins.

MORE INFORMATION

If you want to use legal-sized paper from bin 1 (lower hopper), use the control panel on the printer to select legal-sized paper in hopper 1 and print as usual.

If you want to use legal-sized paper from bin 2 (upper hopper) but want to continue using letter-sized paper from bin 1, use the control panel on the printer to select legal-sized paper in hopper 2, select hopper 1 as your current hopper, and make the following modification to the POSTSCRP.INI file:

Change the second “B1” and “B2” entries in the .INI file from

/B1 {statusdict begin 1 setpapertray end} def /B2 {statusdict begin 2 setpapertray end} def

to the following:

/B1 {statusdict begin papertray 1 ne {1 setpapertray end} {end} ifelse} def /B2 {statusdict begin papertray 2 ne {2 setpapertray end userdict begin legal end} {end} ifelse} def

Let each line wrap and don’t add any additional spaces other than the one space between each word when adding the additional PostScript commands.

Be sure that the proper dimensions are set with the Format Division Margins command and that you have Bin2 selected in the Print Options “paper feed:” field when you want to print on legal-sized paper.

If you want to return to printing on letter-sized paper, be sure that you have letter-sized dimensions set in Format Division Margins and that you have Bin1 selected in the “paper feed:” field in Print Options.

If you want to have continuous selected in the “paper feed:” field of the Print Options menu, note that this will select Bin1 and print on letter-sized paper.

Note that these instructions are ONLY for the NEC LC-890; other PostScript printers with legal-sized paper trays should work correctly.
