SUMMARY

The NEC LC-890, using the PostScript printer driver POSTSCRP.PRD or POSTSCRL.PRD in Microsoft Word version 4.00 and POSTSCRP.PRD in Word versions 5.00 and 5.50, may not print even though the printer is receiving information, as demonstrated by the printer’s flashing display light.

The following are some possible explanations and workarounds for this problem:

1. The printer must be set in PostScript batch mode.

2. Try resetting the printer by turning it off and on. The dictionary stack or memory sometimes gets filled and doesn’t receive the complete PostScript initialization file from Word.

3. When the original POSTSCRP.PRD or POSTSCRL.PRD printer driver supplied with Word 4.00 is used, there is no support for the selection of bins in the “feed:” field of the Print Options command.

   Note that bin feed selection is supported in Word 5.00 and 5.50.

4. The printer will work correctly using either a serial or parallel connection. If it is connected through a serial port, make sure the correct DOS Mode command is used. If connected to COM1, the Mode command should read as follows:

   MODE COM1:9600,n,8,1,p

5. If other programs are used (for example, Ventura Publisher), the dictionary stack used by the printer has probably been overcroed; resetting the printer will clear this stack, enabling the line-draw procedure name to be placed into the dictionary and printed.

6. Set the “wait time” in the printer’s mode menu to 30 seconds, instead of its default of 5 or 10 seconds. The mode menu is accessed from the front panel of the printer. For more information about the LC-890’s mode menu, consult the “Silentwriter LC-890 User’s Guide.”
