Returning to Mirroring After Unmasking an Orphan ID Number: Q70269

2.00 OS/2

Summary:

Currently, there is no way to return to disk mirroring or duplexing after unmasking an orphaned drive in LAN Manager version 2.00 without reinstalling OS/2 and LAN Manager.

More Information:

Consider the typical scenario where the partition being mirrored goes bad. Physical disk 0 has a D partition that is mirrored by a secondary external hard disk. The D partition on physical disk 0 is then inflicted by some critical error that cannot be corrected without repartitioning and reformatting it. Since the D partition has an exact duplicate on the external drive, the duplicate is unmasked and replaces the former D partition on the primary drive.

Now, consider that the bad partition on the primary drive has been repaired and can now be put back into service. Without backing up the files mirrored by the external hard disk onto another drive, it is impossible to remirror drive D with the external hard disk, since both partitions are reformatted during disk mirroring setup.

Backing up the files may not be a problem if the mirrored partition was not that large; however, if the mirrored partition was, for example, 150 MB, not only would you need to find a hard disk or tape drive with 150 MB of free space, you must go through the time consuming process of reinstalling.
