Word 5.50: Setup Hangs when Updating System Files on OS/2 1.30

MS-DOS

SUMMARY

When running the Microsoft Word version 5.50 Setup program under OS/2 version 1.30, Setup will hang if the “Update the system files” option is chosen.

To prevent this problem from occurring, select the “Do not update system files” option and complete the Setup process. Once completed, manually update the system files by doing the following:

Changes to the CONFIG.SYS File

  1. Add the statement IOPL=YES, if it doesn’t exist.
  2. Add the drive and directory path where Word 5.50 has been installed to the SET PATH= statement. If no SET PATH= statement exists in the CONFIG.SYS file, then add one.

Changes to the AUTOEXEC.BAT File

  1. Add the drive and directory path where Word 5.50 has been installed to the SET PATH= statement. If no SET PATH= statement exists in the CONFIG.SYS file, then add one.

If Word 5.50 was installed on a network workstation with the SETUP USER option, the drive and directory path of the network server where the Word 5.50 program files reside should be added to the SET PATH= statement (for example, F:).

  2. If Word 5.50 was installed on a network workstation with the SETUP USER option, add the statement SET MSWNET55=[path].

Note: [path] is the drive and directory path that was specified when running SETUP USER.

The above [path] variable is not the location on the network file server where the Word 5.50 program files have been installed. The drive and directory path specified by the SET MSWNET55 statement can be a local hard disk drive, or a subdirectory on the network server’s hard disk drive.

Note: The drive and directory path specified by the SET MSWNET55 statement must be unique for each workstation that will be accessing the Word 5.50 program files from the network server.

Changes to the STARTUP.CMD File (Optional)

Add the drive and directory path where Word 5.50 has been installed to the SET PATH= statement. If no SET PATH= statement exists, then add one.
