SUMMARY

The EPSONLQ2.PRD printer driver, which was designed for Epson LQ models 850 and 1050, creates subscript and superscript formatting by increasing or decreasing the line spacing. Superscript and subscript formatting with this driver does not affect the size of the character (that is, the character remains full size).

Also, if the character has underline formatting applied to it, the underline will move up or down with the character.

The following are alternate methods of sizing superscripted and subscripted text.

MORE INFORMATION

Use EPSONLQ1.PRD

The EPSONLQ1.PRD printer driver, which was designed for the Epson LQ models 800 and 1000, has a different method for doing superscript and subscript, resulting in a smaller character and no displacement of the underline. This driver can be used on the 850 or the 1050, but there will be fewer font selections.

The following table describes where EPSONLQ1 can be found:

                            Disk Size
Word Version File Name (Inches) Disk Directory

Alter EPSONLQ2.PRD

The control codes for the EPSONLQ2.PRD printer driver can be modified to match the superscript/subscript performance of the EPSONLQ1.PRD driver. To alter EPSONLQ2.PRD, do the following:

  1. At the DOS prompt in the Word program directory (for example, C:), enter the following command:

    makeprd -t epsonlq2.prd oldlq2.doc

Note: DOS is not case sensitive here.

  2. Load the document OLDLQ2.DOC into Word (choose File Open in Word 5.50 or Transfer Load in Word 5.00).

  3. Search for the text “byte:174” (without the quotation marks). The following lines will display:

    byte:174 mod:2 magic:0 value:0 byte:180 mod:0 byte:184 mod:2 magic:0 value:0 byte:190 mod:0

  4. Change the above lines to match the lines below:

    byte:174 mod:0 magic:0 value:0 “^[S0” byte:180 mod:0 “^[T” byte:184 mod:0 magic:0 value:0 “^[S1” byte:190 mod:0 “^[T”

Note: Printer driver text is case sensitive (the S’s and T’s in quotation marks must be capitalized). Also note that the mod settings at bytes 174 and 184 should be changed from 2 to 0.

  5. Save the file as NEWLQ2.DOC. Make sure that the Format option is set to “Text-only.”

  6. Exit Word and return to the DOS prompt in the Word program directory.

  7. Enter the following command:

    makeprd -p newlq2.prd newlq2.doc

When the MakePRD program completes, a new printer driver called NEWLQ2.PRD will be created. This printer driver will print superscript and subscript in the same manner as the EPSONLQ1.PRD file (the superscript or subscript characters are smaller in size than the regular character size), but it will have the full font support from EPSONLQ2.PRD.
