Word 5.50: Running on IBM 3270 PC with Control Program

SUMMARY
Microsoft Word version 5.50 may hang or not run properly when running in a DOS session created by IBM’s 3270 Personal Computer Control Program if the following steps are not performed when installing and configuring Word 5.50 for the 3270 Control Program environment:
- Run Setup and select the “Safe keyboard support for TSRs, 3270 emulators” option from the list of computer types. This will cause Setup to incorporate the BIOSSAFE.KBD keyboard driver into the video driver (SCREEN.VID) used by Word 5.50. Word will not run if “Safe keyboard support…” is not selected.
- Verify that 384K (393,216 bytes) of system memory (RAM) is available before starting SETUP.EXE or Word 5.50. If there is less than 384K of system memory available, Word may run slowly or hang.
- Set the Cursor Control Speed setting to zero (0) from within the View Preferences dialog box. This will prevent the last character entered from the keyboard from being repeated on the screen indefinitely until the ESC key is pressed.
- Do not attempt to jump or toggle from Word 5.50 to a 3270 host session while Word 5.50 is running in a graphics display mode. Before jumping to a 3270 host session, change Word’s display mode to text by using the View Preferences command or by pressing ALT+F9.
Performing the above steps still may not allow Word 5.50 to run correctly on an IBM 3270 Personal Computer, even if the IBM 3270 Personal Computer Control Program is not loaded in memory.
