SUMMARY

A Microsoft Word document saved on a floppy disk may become corrupted if the floppy disk is removed from the disk drive while the document is open in Word and another floppy disk is inserted in its place prior to saving the document.

Floppy disks should never be removed from the disk drive while a document stored on the disk is open in Word. The only exception to this is if the Word program prompts for another disk.

If you need to switch floppy disks to load another document, use the Transfer Clear All (Word 5.00) or File Close All command (Word 5.50) to ensure that all open files on the floppy disk are closed before switching disks.

Documents should not be copied from one floppy disk to another from within Word if the computer has a single floppy disk drive. If the computer has a hard disk, you can copy the file to the hard disk as an intermediate step. To do this, do the following:

  1. Load the document from the floppy disk.
  2. Save the document to the hard disk.
  3. Close all files on the floppy disk with the Transfer Clear All (Word 5.00) or File Close All command (Word 5.50).
  4. Load the document from the hard disk.
  5. Save the document to the new floppy disk.

Note: Two users cannot simultaneously edit a document from the same floppy disk.
