Summary:

This article explains how to access the Microsoft Software/Data Library.

More Information:

If you do not have a CompuServe account, contact CompuServe Customer Service at (800) 848-8990.

Connection to CompuServe

A modem and communication software are required to connect to CompuServe. The modem can have a baud rate of either 300/1200 or 2400. CompuServe communication settings are 8 data bits, 1 stop bit, no parity or 7 data bits, 1 stop bit, and even parity.

The telecommunication software is necessary to act as an interface between the computer and CompuServe.

The Software/Data Library includes all of the application notes and printer drivers available for all Microsoft products. After logging on to CompuServe, type

go msl

at the CompuServe ! prompt.

The following menu will appear:

MICROSOFT SOFTWARE LIBRARY

  1 BROWSE thru files
  2 SCAN
  3 KEYWORD list
  4 DOWNLOAD a file
  5 READ a file

Enter choice !

The following is a breakdown of each option.

Option 1-2

Choosing option 1 or 2 prompts for the following:

Enter keywords (e.g. modem) or <CR> for all:

This is a chance to narrow down the search with keywords, such as “HP”, “IBM”, or just “Word”.

It also prompts the following:

Oldest files in days or <CR> for all:

This is a chance to narrow the field to a certain date. Press ENTER to accept the displayed date or type a specific date. As a result, there will be a listing of all files with the specified keyword(s).

The keyword “Word” will result in a listing plus a description of the file contents, one file at a time, such as the listing below. All files are in an archived format:

[76701,144] DWXAE0/binary 05-Dec-90 14336 2

Enter keyword (e.g. modem) or <CR> for all: hp

Count: Keyword:

17 HP

Option 4

Choosing option 4 allows for the downloading of files. For example, the filename that was referred to in the above file description can be entered as a file to download (DWXAE0).
