MS-DOS

The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft MS-DOS operating system versions 4.00 and 4.01

Summary:

Microsoft has confirmed that MS-DOS versions 4.00 and 4.01 do not work correctly when accessing files that are close to or larger than 32 MB (megabytes) in size. This includes files that are exactly 32 MB minus 1 byte in size, as reported in popular trade magazines.

This problem does not occur in later versions of MS-DOS.

Microsoft has produced a patch program named PATCH32M.EXE that corrects this problem by modifying the MSDOS.SYS (or IBMDOS.COM) file on you system. PATCH32M can be found in the Software/Data Library by searching on the word PATCH32M, the Q number of this article, or S12506. PATCH32M was archived using the PKware file-compression utility.

PATCH32M.EXE is also available as an application note titled “MS-DOS 4.0x Patch Disk” (PD0255). Application notes can be obtained by calling Microsoft Product Support Services.
