Inserting Glossary Text in Footnote Gives “Not a Valid Action”

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Word version 5.0, when a glossary entry is inserted into a footnote, the following error message may be displayed:

Not a valid action for footnotes or annotations

It is possible that the glossary contains an entry that has a footnote reference mark included in it.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Word version 5.0. This problem was corrected in Word version 5.5.

MORE INFORMATION

The problem stems from the existence of a glossary entry located anywhere in the current glossary file that contains a footnote reference mark. If this condition exists, the error message will occur when any glossary entry is inserted into the footnote text.

While it is not easy to directly identify which glossary entry contains the footnote reference, you can narrow down the possibilities. Print out the glossary entries using the Print Glossary command and set the footnotes to print out on the same page (use the Format Division Layout command). The footnote reference will print out on the same page as the glossary entry that contains the footnote reference mark. KBCategory: kbother kberrmsg KBSubcategory:
