The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Word for the Macintosh, version 4.0

SUMMARY

The Spelling function in Word version 4.00 should reopen up to three user dictionaries that were open in the previous session. The name and location of each user dictionary is saved in the current configuration file.

Therefore, if you open a different configuration file or remove the Word Settings (4) file from the System Folder, Word may not be able to tell which user dictionaries were previously open.

Word version 4.00 looks for the user dictionary in the following order:

  1. In the folder you booted Word from
  2. In the System Folder
  3. In the root directory of all mounted volumes

If Word still can’t find the user dictionary, it then displays an Open dialog box asking you to locate the file.
