Word: Computer Hangs When Using Include Instructions

PSS ID Number: Q40577 Article last modified on 11-02-1994

4.00

MS-DOS

SUMMARY

The computer hangs during a Print Merge if you use an Include instruction that is not terminated with a right chevron, a paragraph mark (carriage return), new line character (SHIFT+ENTER), page break (CTRL+SHIFT+ENTER), or division break (CTRL+ENTER). The message “Not a valid file” appears. The mouse remains active, but the keyboard is disabled. You must reboot by simultaneously pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem with Word Version 4.00. This problem was corrected in Word Version 5.00.
