Summary:
If all graphics in a Microsoft Word for the Macintosh version 4.0 document appear as gray rectangles, choose Preferences from the Edit menu and deselect the Use Picture Placeholders option.
This option (when selected) speeds up scrolling but does not affect the way graphics print.
