Numbering Footnotes Consecutively in Linked Documents

SUMMARY
Word does not have a feature to automatically number footnotes consecutively across linked documents. However, this procedure can be done manually.
To number footnotes consecutively in linked documents, follow the appropriate procedure below.
Word Version 5.0
- Open the first document in the series.
- Note the last footnote reference number in that document.
- Open the next document in the series.
- From the Format menu, choose Document.
- In the Number From box, type the page number you want to use to start numbering the next document (this should be the next number after the number you noted in the first document).
Word Versions 3.x and 4.0
- Open the first document in the series.
- Note the last footnote reference number in that document.
- Open the next document in the series.
- From the Format menu, choose Document (for Word versions 4.0) or choose Page Setup from the File menu (for Word versions 3.x).
- Under Footnotes, type the next footnote number in the Number From box (for Word 4.0) or the Start Footnote Numbers At box (for Word versions 3.x).
- Repeat steps 2-5 for each of the documents in the series.
Please note that the above procedure works only for automatically numbered footnote references.
