SYMPTOMS

On a computer that runs Microsoft Windows 2000, when you try to update Outlook 2000 or Office 2000 Service Release 1 (SR1) by applying the security patch, the following error message may appear:

The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.

If you click OK, the following error message appears:

The path path name cannot be found. Verify that you have access to this location and try again or try to find the installation package Data1.msi in the folder from which you installed the product

If you click Cancel, the following error message appears:

Error 1706. No valid source could be found for the product Office 2000 product. The Windows Installer cannot continue.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur under the following conditions:

  • If the Microsoft Windows Installer does not identify the correct path to the Data1.msi file.
  • If a DLL file was changed during an upgrade to Internet Explorer version 5.01.
  • If the stand-alone version of Outlook was installed before you upgraded to the full version of Office 2000.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, first do one of the following to make sure that the Data1.msi file is correctly located.

Open the Data1.msi File from the CD-ROM

  1. Insert the Office 2000 CD 1 into the CD-ROM drive, and then click Cancel to close any splash screens that appear.
  2. Quit all programs that are running, including antivirus programs.
  3. Download the security patch file from the Microsoft Web site, and then double-click the security patch file to start the installation.
  4. If you are prompted for the Office SR1 CD, click Browse, and then click the drive letter that represents the CD-ROM drive.
  5. Click the Data1.msi file, click Open, and then click OK.

Open the Data1.msi File from the Hard Disk Drive

  1. In Windows Explorer, locate the Data.msi file on the CD-ROM, and then copy the file to the disk drive.
  2. Insert the Office 2000 CD 1 into the CD-ROM drive, and then click Cancel to close any splash screens that appear.
  3. Quit all programs that are running, including antivirus programs.
  4. Download the security patch file from the Microsoft Web site, and then double-click the file to start the installation.
  5. If you are prompted for the Office SR1 CD, click Browse, and then click the drive letter that represents the hard disk drive.
  6. Click the Data1.msi file in the folder where you saved the file, click Open, and then click OK.

If opening the Data1.msi file correctly does not resolve the behavior, try upgrading to the latest version of Internet Explorer, and then reapply the security patch.

If the behavior still persists, you may need to remove and then reinstall the Office program, SR1a, and the security patch.
