SYMPTOMS

When you try to use a feature that is set to Installed on First Use, you may receive the following error message:

The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.

Click OK to try again, or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package 'data1.msi' in the box below.

However, you cannot type anything in the box at the bottom of the dialog box, and there is no Browse button.

When you click Cancel, an error message similar to the following appears:

Error 1706. No valid source could be found for product Office 2000 product. The Windows installer cannot continue.

NOTE: If you are using Microsoft Windows 2000, you only receive the second of these two error messages.

CAUSE

These symptoms can occur if all of the following are true:

• You are using Microsoft Windows 2000 or Microsoft Windows NT 4.0.
• You have Windows Installer version 1.1 or later installed.
  

NOTE: Windows 2000 includes Windows Installer version 1.1.

• You are logged on as either a user or a power user.
• The AllowLockdownBrowse policy is not in effect.

WORKAROUND

If you are logged on as a user or power user and you want to browse to an Office source location, you must turn on the AllowLockdownBrowse system policy.

In Microsoft Windows 2000

If you are using Windows 2000, follow these steps to turn on this policy:

1. Log on as a member of the Administrators group.
2. Click Start, and then click Run.
3. In the Open box, type MMC and then click OK.
4. Add the Group Policy snap-in.
5. Click the plus sign (+) next to Local Computer Policy object to expand the view.
6. Click the plus sign (+) next to Computer Configuration to expand the view.
7. Expand Administrative Templates.
8. Expand Windows Components, and then click Windows Installer, so that the Windows Installer policy settings appear in the right pane.
9. Double-click the Enable user to browse for source while elevated policy setting.
10. Click Enabled, and then click to select the Check to force this setting on check box.
11. Click OK to accept the new policy setting.
12. Double-click the Enable user to use media source while elevated policy setting.
13. Click Enabled, and then click to select the Check to force this setting on check box.
14. Click OK to accept the new policy setting.
15. Quit Microsoft Management Console and then restart the computer.

In Microsoft Windows NT 4.0

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.


If you are using Windows NT 4.0, follow these steps to turn on this policy:

1. Log on as an administrator.
2. On the Start menu, click Run.
3. In the Open box, type Regedit, and then click OK.
4. Create the following registry key structure if it does not exist:

   HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer

5. Click to select the Installer key. Point to New on the Edit menu, and then click DWORD Value.
6. With New Value #1 selected, type AllowLockdownBrowse, and then press ENTER.
7. Double-click the new AllowLockdownBrowse DWORD value.
8. Type 1 in the Value data box, and then click OK.
9. Click to select the Installer key. Point to New on the Edit menu, and then click DWORD Value.
10. With New Value #1 selected, type AllowLockdownMedia, and then press ENTER.
11. Double-click the new AllowLockdownMedia DWORD value.
12. Type 1 in the Value data box, and then click OK.
13. On the Registry menu, click Exit.
14. Log off as the administrator, and log back on as a user or power user.

MORE INFORMATION

If you turn on the AllowLockdownBrowse policy, the Browse button is displayed in the error message dialog box. However, if you browse to a valid .msi file on your CD, you continue to receive the 1706 error message. In order to browse to the .msi file on your CD, you also must turn on the AllowLockdownMedia policy.
