XCON: Can't Create Inbound or Outbound-Only Servers--Zero Is Not Accepted Value

Article ID: 251531

Article Last Modified on 2/21/2007

APPLIES TO

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server Standard Edition

This article was previously published under Q251531

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server, on the properties of an SMTP virtual server, the Limit number of Connections to value must be set between 1 and 1999999999. If you specify 0 (zero) in an attempt to create an inbound or outbound-only Internet server, you receive the following error message:

Please enter an integer between 1 and 1999999999.

WORKAROUND

To create an outbound-only server, you must use existing Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 outbound Internet Mail Service servers and create an SMTP connector that has the "outbound 5.5" server as the source bridgehead. Therefore, mail flowing outbound only flows through those servers. To create an inbound-only server, set your external MX records to point to the "inbound 5.5" servers. Do not set up an SMTP connector that uses those servers as a source bridgehead. Therefore, no mail flowing outbound will ever go through those servers.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
