SYMPTOMS

When you try to restore a backup to your Windows CE-based device, you may receive the following error message:

The backup file you have selected was created from a mobile device using an incompatible language than the device you have selected. Restore cannot continue with this operation.

CAUSE

This error message can occur if your backup was created with a regional setting that is different from the default of English (United States), and you "cold" or "hard" reset the Windows CE-based device before attempting to restore the backup.

RESOLUTION

After you reset the device, but before you attempt to restore the backup, change the regional settings in Control Panel to the region in which you created the backup.
