SUMMARY
This article describes how to optimize an installation of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2000 without removing the program. You can do this by deleting some of the stored (cached) files that are created when you install Flight Simulator 2000.
When you install Flight Simulator 2000, multiple files are created and cached in the program for later use. It may be advantageous to delete certain of these cached files. If you delete them, you may experience the following symptoms:
- Any cached files that have become damaged are automatically recreated when you restart Flight Simulator 2000.
- Some of the game settings may be returned to their default settings. This may cause some of the hardware installed in your computer to be redetected.
This article also resolves the issue when you receive the following error message:

To optimize your installation of Flight Simulator 2000, use one or more of the following methods.
Delete the Fs2000.cfg File
To delete the Fs2000.cfg file:
- Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
- In the Named box, type fs2000.cfg.
- In the Look in box, click My Computer.
- Click Find Now.
- In the list of found files, right-click the Fs2000.cfg file, and then click Delete.
- When you are prompted to confirm the file deletion, click Yes.
- Close the Find: Files Named Fs2000.cfg window.
Delete the Filelist.dat Files
To delete the Filelist.dat files:
- Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
- In the Named box, type filelist.dat.
- In the Look in box, click My Computer.
- Click Find Now.
- In the list of found files, press and hold down the CTRL key as you click to select each file that is located in the FS2000 folder (or any folder located inside the FS2000 folder).
- Right-click one of the selected files, and then click Delete.
- When you are prompted to confirm the file deletion, click Yes.
- Close the Find: Files Named Filelist.dat window.
Delete All Files in the FS2000 Folder That Contain the Word "Index"
To delete all of the files in the FS2000 folder that contain the word "Index":
- Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
- In the Named box, type *_INDEX*.
- In the Look in box, click My Computer.
- Click Find Now.
- In the list of found files, press and hold down the CTRL key as you click to select each file that is located in the FS2000 folder (or any folder inside the FS2000 folder).
- Right-click one of the selected files, and then click Delete.
- When you are prompted to confirm the file deletion, click Yes.
- In the Named box, type *INDEX_*.
- In the Look in box, click My Computer.
- Click Find Now.
- In the list of found files, press and hold down the CTRL key as you click to select each file that is located in the FS2000 folder (or any folder inside the FS2000 folder).
- Right-click one of the selected files, and then click Delete.
- When you are prompted to confirm the file deletion, click Yes.

Delete the Previous Flight.wx and Previous Flight.flt files
To delete the Previous Flight.wx and Previous Flight.flt files:
- Click Start, point to Find, and then click Files or Folders.
- In the Named box, type Previous flight.WX.
- In the Look in box, click My Computer.
- Click Find Now.
- In the list of found files, right-click the Previous flight.wx file located in the Pilots folder, and then click Delete.
- When you are prompted to confirm the file deletion, click Yes.
- In the Named box, type Previous flight.FLT.
- In the Look in box, click My Computer.
- Click Find Now.
- In the list of found files, right-click the Previous flight.flt file located in the Pilots folder, and then click Delete.
- When you are prompted to confirm the file deletion, click Yes.
- Close the Find: Files Named Previous Flight.flt window.
