NOTE: The procedures in this article only apply if you have installed Outlook with the Corporate or Workgroup option. With this option, you can use Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) services. To determine your installation type, click About Microsoft Outlook on the Help menu. If you have the Corporate or Workgroup installation, you see "Corporate or Workgroup".

SUMMARY

When you create a Rules Wizard rule that automatically forwards messages or replies, the message does not appear in the Sent Items folder. There is no indication that the message was forwarded; however, the the message is forwarded according to the rule.

MORE INFORMATION

This behavior is because the rule is processed on the Microsoft Exchange Server computer. The delivery point for your incoming mail does not effect this behavior; delivery to the server mailbox, or to a local personal folders file produces the same behavior. Outlook used with the Internet Mail Only setup option does save a copy in the Sent Items folder.

Steps to Reproduce Problem

  1. In Outlook (CW) with Exchange Server in the profile, on the Tools menu, click Rules Wizard.
  2. Create the following rule:

    Check messages when they arrive
with specific words in the subject (My Test)
forward to people or distribution list (enter an e-mail name)
    no exceptions

  3. Have someone send you a message with My Test in the subject line.

When received, the item will be forwarded to the e-mail name in the rule, but the forwarded message will not be stored in the Sent Items folder. It is important to note that the same behavior will occur if you select reply using a specific template.

NOTE: The Run Now option in the Rules Wizard will cause the rule to place a copy of the message in the sent items folder.
