XWEB: HTTP Error 401 401.1 Unauthorized Logon Failed

The information in this article applies to:


  • Microsoft Outlook Web Access, version 5.5
  • Microsoft Exchange Server, version 5.5





SYMPTOMS

When you are using Outlook Web Access (OWA), you may receive the following error message:

HTTP Error 401 401.1 Unauthorized: Logon Failed

The following event may be to the application log of the Microsoft Internet Information Server computer:

Event ID 100

Details
Source: w3svc
Category: none
Type: Warning

Description The server was unable to log the windows NT account "USERNAME" due to the following error: Log on failure: Unknown user name or bad password. The data is the error code.



CAUSE

These errors may occur if you type account credentials incorrectly three times into the Logon dialog box.



RESOLUTION

When you type user credentials, ensure that you are using the following syntax:

domain name\user name

If you do not specify the domain name, the account may not be properly validated.
