SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to install Microsoft Outlook Express 4.0 using the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) CD-ROM included with your Gateway computer, Outlook Express may not be installed, and you may receive following error message:

Install Complete
Installation Summary
Microsoft Outlook Express - Error Downloading component.

NOTE: If you install the Full Installation version of Microsoft Internet Explorer from the OEM CD-ROM, Outlook Express is not installed, and you do not receive an error message.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because Gateway does not include Outlook Express on some versions of the OEM CD-ROM provided with new computers.

RESOLUTION

To work around this behavior, obtain Outlook Express from the Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 Component Download Web site. To do so, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double- click Add/Remove Programs.
  2. In the list of installed programs, click Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0, and then click Add/Remove.
  3. Click "Add a component to Internet Explorer," and then click OK.
  4. If you are prompted to connect to your Internet service provider (ISP), click Yes.
  5. Click Yes when you receive the following prompt:

  1. Click the Microsoft Outlook Express check box to select it, and then click Next.
  2. In the "Please Select A Download Site" box, click a site, and then click Install Now.
  3. Click OK when you receive the message "Installation Summary: Microsoft Outlook Express - Succeeded."
  4. Click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer.
