SUMMARY

This article describes the proper procedure to remove a later version of Microsoft Outlook, and then reinstall Microsoft Outlook 97.

MORE INFORMATION

After you install a later version of Outlook, if you wish to revert to Outlook 97, you must follow these steps:

  1. Click the Start button, point to Settings and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. Click to select the later verson of Outlook from the Install/Uninstall list, and click Add/Remove.
  4. Click Remove Outlook, and follow the instructions.
  5. When the removal finishes, click to select Microsoft Office 97 or Microsoft Office 2000 from the Install/Uninstall list, and click Add/Remove.
  6. In Maintenance Mode Setup, click Reinstall, and follow the instructions.

If you installed the Professional version of Office 97, the information for the installed Office components is stored in the Off97Pro.stf file. This file is modified by Outlook Setup.

If you installed the Standard version of Office 97, the information for the installed Office components is stored in the Off97Std.stf file.

Outlook 97 and later version of Outlook share many of the same files. Some of these files are newer and contain different information; if you remove one version of Outlook, the other version will not function properly.

Using Eraser97 or Eraser2k To Remove Outlook

If shared components are left on the computer after completing the steps is the previous section, you may receive errors when you attempt to start Outlook 97. If this happens, follow these steps:

  1. Uninstall the later version of Outlook.
  2. Uninstall Office 97.
  3. Run the Office removal tool, Eraser97 for Office 97 or Eraser2k for Office 2000.
  4. Reinstall Office 97 with Outlook 97.
