SUMMARY

A utility that helps you completely remove Office is available. The Office 97 File and Registry Eraser Utility removes most of the files and Windows registry settings that remain on the computer after you remove Office. This utility is designed to be run after you run the Setup program for Office and click Remove All to remove Office. This utility is also designed to be used on stand-alone computers or workstations.

NOTES

  • Q158658 applies to Microsoft Windows 95, Microsoft Windows 98, and Microsoft Windows NT 4.0.
  • If there are no other programs installed in your Microsoft Office folder (Microsoft Publisher 98, for example), make sure you delete the Microsoft Office folder from your Program Files folder before you run the Office 97 File and Registry Eraser Utility. The Microsoft Office folder and Office fonts are not removed with this utility.
  • Microsoft does not recommend running the Office 97 File and Registry Eraser Utility on a computer on which Office 2000 has been installed. This utility is not designed for use with Office 2000.
  • The eraser utility does not run on operating systems later than Microsoft Windows 2000.

The following updates have been made to the Office 97 File and Registry Eraser Utility:

  • Version 4.1 dated April 25, 2002:

    The utility is disabled when Microsoft Windows XP is installed.

  • Version 4.0 dated April 20, 2001:

    Support for Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me).
    The utility is disabled when Microsoft Office XP is installed.

  • Version 2.0 dated August 10, 1998:

    Detection of the operating system (Microsoft Windows 95 and later and, Microsoft Windows NT). Running Windows 98, the file Mfc40.dll is not removed due to a conflict with the Microsoft System Information program. Running Windows NT, the file Comcat.dll is not removed due to a conflict with Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 when using the Active Desktop.

To verify your specific version of the Office 97 File and Registry Eraser Utility, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
  2. In the Search for files or folders named box, type Eraser97.exe and then click Search Now.
  3. Right-click Eraser97.exe. Click Properties on the shortcut menu, and then click the Version tab.
