SYMPTOMS

After you complete the installation of Small Business Server (SBS), you may receive the following error message on a blue screen at startup:

Stop 0x0000009a (0x00000019, 0x00000000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) (System_License_Violation)

CAUSE

This behavior is by design, as Small Business Server must be installed as a Primary Domain Controller(PDC). If it is installed as a Stand Alone server, you receive the error message.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use the appropriate method.

For Computers Running SBS 4.0

Follow the proper installation instructions for SBS. The instructions are listed below and are outlined in Chapter 3 of the Start Here Guide that is included with the product and are the only supported methods for installing SBS.

If your computer is currently running Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows NT, perform the following steps:

  1. Insert Disc 1, or Disc 1 Alpha-processor (whichever is appropriate for your system) into your CD-ROM drive.
  2. On the desktop, double-click My Computer, and then double-click the icon for your CD-ROM drive. The CD-ROM window appears.
  3. Double-click Sbssetup.exe or run sbssetup.exe from the root of disc 1. The Small Business Server CD-ROM window appears.
  4. Click Small Business Server Setup. The Setup program starts.

If your computer has an x86-based processor and is currently running the MS-DOS operating system (or has no operating system installed), perform the following steps:

NOTE: You must have a formatted partition (either DOS, FAT16, or NTFS) on the hard drive to run the Setup program. Also, the partition on which you are installing should not be larger than 2 GB.

  1. Turn off your computer.
  2. Insert the disk labeled "Small Business Server Setup Boot Disk 1" into drive A of your computer.
  3. Turn on your computer. The Setup program starts.
  4. Insert Setup Disks 2 and 3 when prompted.
  5. When you see the message, "Please insert the compact disc labeled Windows NT Server CD-ROM", insert the CD labeled "Disc 1".

If you have an Alpha-based computer that does not have Windows NT installed, perform the following steps:

  1. Insert the CD labeled "Disc 1 Alpha processor" into your CD-ROM drive.
  2. At the ARC screen, choose Run A Program from the menu.
  3. At the prompt, type cd:\alpha\setupldr and then press ENTER to start the Setup program

For Computers Running SBS 4.5

You must perform the installation using the original Setup disks. If the Setup disks are missing or modified, make replacement Setup disks by running winnt32 /ox from the I386 folder on CD-ROM 1.
