Damaged .cab Files After Downloading from an FTP Server

The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.0 for Windows 95
- Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.0 for Windows NT 4.0
SYMPTOMS
When you download Internet Explorer version 4.0 from an FTP server and then try to upgrade Internet Explorer version 3.x, the installation process may stop responding (hang).
CAUSE
Internet Explorer 4.0 files can become damaged when you download them from a busy FTP server because of a problem in Internet Explorer 3.x.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, follow these steps:
- Restart your computer.
- Use any text editor (such as Notepad) to open the Active Setup Log.txt file in the Windows folder.
- Read through the Active Setup Log.txt file to determine at what point Active Setup stopped.
- Close the Active Setup Log.txt file.
- Delete the damaged .cab file, and then connect to the Internet.
- Run Internet Explorer Active Setup again.
STATUS
Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.0. We are researching this problem and will post new information here in the Microsoft Knowledge Base as it becomes available.
